Friction Firecrafting & Camping

Share a Unique Experience with Your Kid Learning Primitive Skills While Connecting Deeply with Nature and Each Other

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of lighting your first fire without a match or lighter.

Manually creating the spark, nurturing the ember, carrying the flame.

It’s a primal sensation but not in a wild or out of control way; more like returning to a sense of belonging in the natural world, a mastery of it without the need to dominate it or separate yourself from it.

Sharing that kind of experience with your kid, among a community of other awesome dads and kids?

Now that’s the stuff of lifelong memories.

In this workshop, we create a unique experience for dads and (one of) their kid(s): one of embodied learning and practice in being in community with others.

And for those who want the full experience, we’ve added an overnight camping option!

After your kid has felt the magic of sparking their own fire and helped make their dinner you can rest your heads where it feels like you’re in the forest but pristine, full bathroom facilities are just down the hill (and home isn’t much further if anyone decides it’s a bit much for them!).

We’ll provide a tent and help you pitch it, and will make sure you bring all the right gear for a cozy night under the canopy.

Dads will also have the opportunity to join a circle of rad dads around the fire once the kids are asleep, deepening their own experience of learning and finding new brothers who can support their journey through fatherhood.

Details

When: April 13, 4-7pm ET (dinner included)

*If staying overnight we will vacate the premises by 10am on April 14

Where: Bretton Woods Recreation Center

Participating kids should be between the ages of 5 and 9, and each dad can bring one child (there will be others if you have other kids).

Each dad will work individually with their kid to learn how to start their individual fire with just flint and steel. We’ll then join those sparks into a communal fire - embodying the experience of sharing our work with others to create something greater than our individual efforts produce.

We’ll cap things off with roasting some fancy camping food and treats in our communal fire.

If you stick around for overnight camping we’ll provide tents for sleeping as well as full bathroom facilities, breakfast the next morning, and plenty of water and firewood. After the kids go to sleep the dads will have time for a deeper conversation on fire, family, and how we keep our internal fires stoked.

Materials Needed:

For Friction Fire Workshop Only

Nothing really. Just whatever clothing you and your kid need to be comfortable in that day’s weather and water bottles for both of you.

For Overnight Camping

You’ll need to bring your own sleeping gear (sleeping bags, pillows, blankets, etc.) but we’ll provide tents, water, real bathrooms (not port-a-potties), and breakfast in the morning.
